Why is AI visibility important?

AI visibility is important because a growing share of people now get answers from ChatGPT, Google's AI features, and Perplexity instead of scrolling through search results. If those tools never mention or cite your business, you are missing from the answer itself, even when your website still ranks well in traditional search.

AI visibility is important because a growing share of people now get answers from AI tools like ChatGPT, Google's AI features, and Perplexity instead of scrolling through search results. If those tools never mention or cite your business, you are missing from the answer itself, even when your website still ranks well in traditional search.

How many people actually use AI to find answers now?

The audience is already very large. OpenAI reported in March 2026 that ChatGPT has more than 900 million weekly active users. (OpenAI)

In July 2026, Google said AI Mode in Search had passed 1 billion monthly active users, and that the Gemini app had 950 million. (Google)

Those figures describe AI use in general, not how many people use AI specifically to choose a business, product, or service provider. No reliable public number exists for that yet. What the figures do show is that asking an AI tool has become an ordinary way to start looking for something.

What happens to website clicks when an AI answer appears?

People click through far less. Pew Research Center analysed the browsing data of 900 U.S. adults in March 2025 and found that users who saw a Google AI summary clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% for users who did not see one. (Pew Research Center)

Clicks on the links inside the AI summary were rarer still, at 1% of visits. Users were also more likely to end their browsing session entirely after a results page with an AI summary (26%) than after one without it (16%).

So the AI answer is increasingly where the decision happens. A good ranking on the page underneath it is worth less if fewer people scroll down to it.

Why isn't ranking well on Google enough anymore?

Ranking and being cited are two different outcomes. A ranking puts your link in a list a person may or may not click. An AI answer summarises a handful of sources and names only some of them, so a page can rank well and still be left out of the summary the person actually reads.

It is the difference between a shop on a busy street and a shop a friend recommends by name. The first depends on people walking past. The second gets chosen before anyone leaves the house. AI answers behave much more like the recommendation.

What does AI visibility change for a small business?

It changes who gets considered at the moment of choice. When someone asks an AI tool for a jeweller who makes custom engagement rings, or an accounting firm that works with startups, the answer usually names a short list. Businesses on that list get considered. Businesses missing from it often never enter the conversation.

It also shapes how you are described, not just whether you appear. If the information about your business online is thin, outdated, or inconsistent, the description an AI tool gives can be thin, outdated, or wrong as well.

Can a business actually influence whether AI mentions it?

The three steps that decide whether an AI tool can see you at all: How does AI visibility work

Yes, to a meaningful degree, though no one controls it fully. A study by researchers from Princeton and collaborators, published at KDD 2024, found that specific content changes, such as adding citations, quotations, and statistics, could boost a source's visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%. (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024)

That result came from a research setting, so it is not a promise for any single AI tool. It does show that the content itself shapes the outcome. The practical starting point is clear pages that answer real questions directly, business details that match everywhere they appear, and content that other sites have a genuine reason to reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AI visibility the same as SEO?

No, though the two overlap. SEO focuses on ranking pages in search results, while AI visibility is about whether AI tools mention, describe, or cite your business in the answers they generate.

Does AI visibility matter if my customers are local?

Yes. People ask AI tools local questions, such as where to find a dentist or a caterer, just as they ask anything else, and the answer usually names specific businesses. A local business missing from that answer loses the same moment of choice as any other business.

How can I check whether AI tools mention my business today?

The simplest check is to ask them. Put the questions your customers would ask into ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google, then note whether your business appears, how it is described, and which sources are cited. Repeating this across several questions over time gives a far more reliable picture than a single test.

Is it too late to start working on AI visibility?

No. AI tools draw on web content that is published and updated continuously, so improvements to your site and your wider online presence can be picked up over time. Starting now means your information is in better shape as more people rely on these tools.
