Is SEO Dead or Still Relevant in 2026?
SEO isn't dead in 2026, but ranking alone isn't enough anymore. Being quoted or cited by AI engines like Google AI Overview, ChatGPT, and Perplexity is now part of the payoff.

SEO is not dead, it's just not enough anymore in 2026. AI answers use the same crawling, indexing, and ranking systems underneath. What's new is the payoff. Ranking well in search now means being quoted or cited by AI engines like Google AI Overview, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.
Why do people keep saying SEO is dead?
Because clicks dropped once AI answers appeared above the results. Pew Research Centre analysed the browsing data of 900 U.S. adults in March 2025 and found that visitors who saw a Google AI summary clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits, against 15% for those who did not see one. Clicks on links inside the summary were rarer still, at 1% of visits. (Pew Research Center)
The frustration is fair, but it is a claim about clicks, not about optimisation.
What does Google actually say about SEO in AI search?
Google says the same SEO fundamentals apply in this new age of search. Its optimisation guide for generative AI search states that "our generative AI features on Google Search are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems," and, asked whether SEO best practices still matter, answers: "In short, yes! The best practices for SEO continue to be relevant." Google is also blunt about the new acronyms: "from Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." (Google Search Central)
Its separate AI features documentation adds there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." (Google, AI Features and Your Website)
Is search itself getting smaller?
No, at least not commercially. Alphabet reported Google Search and other advertising revenue of $63.3 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, up from $54.2 billion a year earlier. Revenue is not query volume, so that measures the business rather than how many people search. (Alphabet Inc., Q2 2026 results)
The AI surfaces are large too. Google said on June 3, 2026 that AI Overviews had passed 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode 1 billion monthly users. Those are extra places your pages can appear, not replacements for the index underneath. (Google, New controls for website owners)
So what has actually changed for a website owner?
The goal moved from being clicked to being used. A ranking puts a link in a list. An AI answer reads several pages, writes one summary, and names only some of its sources. This means a page can rank well and still be left out of the answer a person reads.
The method barely changes. A page that states its answer plainly near the top is easier to quote than one that circles the point.
What should you do differently in 2026?
The settings to check first, none of which need a developer: How does AI visibility work
Keep the fundamentals clear on every page of your website. Here are the top 5 things every website owner must do.
- Make sure your site can be crawled by AI citation bots, not just training bots
- Server-render your content, not JS-only, so non-JS crawlers can actually read it
- Give every page an accurate title, meta description, and canonical tag
- Add structured data that states your facts explicitly
- Then check it yourself: ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google the questions your customers ask, and note whether you appear and how you are described

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I block AI crawlers from my site?
Usually not, if you want the traffic. Google announced a Search Console toggle on June 3, 2026 letting owners decide whether their site appears in and grounds its generative AI Search features, and says sites that opt out will not receive traffic from them. Blocking suits paywalled content, and costs a business that wants to be found.
Does structured data help my content appear in AI answers?
It helps machines parse your pages, though its direct effect on AI citation is still debated. Schema markup reliably communicates facts such as your address, opening hours, and prices, which is worth doing regardless. Treat it as good hygiene, not a guaranteed lever.
How can I tell whether AI search sends me anything?
Search Console is the starting point. Google states that traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in the Performance report under the Web search type, and it began rolling out separate insights on how pages appear in generative AI features during 2026.
